What is Power over Ethernet?

In its simplest form, PoE is a way to power devices with just an Ethernet cable (Cat5e or Cat6). Digging a little deeper, this technology can be used to expand your network without plugging the device into an outlet. As an example, with just one Ethernet cable, you can stream video and control a wired security camera 300 feet away without an external power source.

Benefits of using PoE

Over the last several years, we have seen a shift in how devices are used and powered. The ability to power devices while also transferring large amounts of data with just one cable expands your ability to automate your environment and extend your network of things. The array of devices that can be connected by this technology is growing everyday. Devices ranging from telephones, thermal & security cameras, audio components and even LED lighting can be added to a single network and controlled with a phone app or a control device like Amazon Alexa or Josh AI.

Types of devices

  • VoIP phones
  • IP cameras including pan–tilt–zoom cameras
  • Wireless access points
  • Network switches
  • Access control components including help-points, intercoms, entry cards, keyless entry, etc.
  • Intelligent lighting controllers and LED Lighting fixtures
  • Remote point of sale kiosks
  • Inline Ethernet extenders

How to switch

While many modern switches and devices are designed to communicate with each other and ensure the correct amount of power is sent to each device, it is advisable to have a professional contractor install your PoE network. As networks and technology advance, new standards are being developed to meet the needs. Your contractor will insure the correct voltages and network standards are applied to your system.
